FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 10 Baylor baseball team used four pitchers and tried several offensive moves, but lost to No. 5 Cal State Fullerton 16-4 on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Titans improve to 2-3.
In his second start of the season, Josh Scott got into trouble early and gave up four runs on four doubles in the third inning before being replaced by freshman Steven White. Scott allowed seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings for the loss.
Baylor scored two runs in the fifth inning when Titan pitcher Jon Smith walked Bryan Loeb and Preston Underdown. Freshman Chris Durbin hit a single to right center to drive in Loeb. Anthony Hensley then walked to load the bases with two outs, setting the stage for Jaime Bubela to walk and bring in Underdown.
The Bears' also scored two runs in the top of the ninth. Freshman catcher Michael Clements walked and Tim Hartshorn had a base hit to put runners on first and second. Both advanced on a wild pitch and Ross Bennett hit a two RBI single.
Sophomore shortstop Jace Brewer did not get a hit in three at-bats, ending his team-high 15-game hitting streak.
The teams will meet again Sunday at 3 p.m. (central) for the third game in the series. Junior right-hander Kyle Evans will start on the mound for the Bears.
