WACO, Texas - Baylor University tracksters Barbara Petrahn and Zsolt Szeglet both qualified for the Hungarian Olympic Team, it was announced Monday by the Hungary Olympic Committee. The two BU student-athletes will compete in the 27th Olympiad to be held in Sydney, Australia, in September.
Petrahn, who will be a senior in the 2001 track season, won the Hungary national championship in the 400 meters last weekend. She will run both the 400 meters and the 4x400-meter relay in Sydney.
Szeglet finished second in the 400 meters last weekend at the Hungary Olympic Trials, however, he will still run the event for Hungary in Sydney. The rising sophomore will also be a member of the Hungarian 4x400 relay team.
"We are extremely proud of both Barbara and Zsolt," Baylor track and field head coach Clyde Hart said Monday. "They both have worked extremely hard this year. We thought one of them would have a chance at the relay teams, but to have both in the open 400 and on the relay team is outstanding."
During the 2000 season, Petrahn, a 1999 All-American, posted team bests in the 200 meters (23.64 seconds) and in the 400 meters (53.32). Her 400 time came in a first-place finish at the Big 12 Championships.
Szeglet, a member of the Baylor 4x400 relay team, finished third in 400 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with a time of 46.08, which stood as the second-best 400 time on the team in 2000.
