Bears Dominate Relays At Houston Meet

HOUSTON - The Baylor track teams dominated the relay events at the Houston Indoor Classic, taking a first and second place finish in the men's 4x400 meters, then adding a first place finish in the distance medley relay. The women finished third in the 4x400 meter relay and second in the DMR.
The men's 4x400 meter relay set a season best time 3:09.64, while the Baylor "B" team took second place with a 3:15.61. The distance medley crew ran a winning time of 10:08.91. On the women's side, the Bears ran a provisional qualifying time of 3:42.57 to finish behind Texas and Rice in the 4x400 meters. The distnce medley relay team took second to Rice with a 12:01.30.
In other events, Kara Newton and Sarah Broyles finished first and second in the women's 3,000 meters with times of 9:46.55 and 9:57.41. Erin Dixon won the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 18:01.54. Barbara Petrahn took second in the 400 meters (54.52), while Karin Ernstrom ended up third in the one mile run (4:54.90). Nzingah Kamani was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.65). The women's team finished third overall with 80.25 points. Texas won the meet with 116 points, followed by Rice with 96.
On the men's side, Marcus Swiat won the high jump competition with a season best and provisional qualifying height of 7-01.75, while Jim Autenreith took the pole vault title with a vault of 16-02.75. Sky Jones finished third at the same height.
In the running events, Floyd Thompson placed second in the 400 meters (47.93) and Brandon Couts was third in the 200 meters (21.67). Barrett Hall finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.14. Overall the Baylor men's team took second in scoring with 81 points, behind meet winner Texas with 89.
