Bears Finish 4th, 9th At Big XII Meet

AMES, Iowa - The Baylor men's track team brought home a fourth place finish and several new school marks from the Big XII Indoor Championships, while the women finished ninth.
The men's 400 meters was dominated by the Bears as Brandon Couts took the title in a time of 45.63. Bayano Kamani was second with a 46.49 and Zsolt Szeglet was fifth with a 46.87.
Floyd Thompson won the 600 yards with a school record 1:07.43, a performance that now ranks as the fifth best ever in the world. Damian Davis finished fourth in the same race with a 1:09.23.
Thompson joined Kamani, Szeglet and Couts on the 4x400m relay team that set a school mark and won the conference title with a 3:04.46.
In the sprints, Couts took second in the 200 meters with a 21.14, while Tre Gardner was fourth in the 60 meters with a 6.77.
Jonathan Pike also scored for the Bears with a seventh place finish in the 800 meters (1:51.17). Ferenc Bekesi was seventh in the mile with a time of 4:12.30.
Scoring in the field events was high jumper Marcus Swiat who finished third after clearing 7-00.25. Jim Autenreith was third in the pole vault with a mark of 17-07.
"We got all we could get out of our men's team today. We had some extraordinary performances which set Big XII, stadium and school records. It was really a good day for our men," head coach Clyde Hart said.
For the women, Barbara Petrahn ran the school's second best time in the 600 yards with a 1:18.21, which was good enough for a second place finish. Keisa Brown took fifth in the 400 meters with a season best 54.56. Those two joined Quanta Anderson and Tamara Johnson to win the 4x400 meter relay with an automatic qualifying time of 3:34.29.
After finishing third in yesterday's 5000 meter race, Karin Ernstrom took 13th in the 3,000 meters, while teammate Kara Newton finished 10th.
"We had some great performances on the women's side as well. They are a young team but with such a big win in the 4x400 meters I think they have some momentum," Hart said.
Nebraska took home the women's title with 154.50 points, while Texas was seocnd with 137.50 and Kansas State was third with 90.50.
The Huskers also won the men's title with 115 points, followed by Texas with 101 and Missouri with 86.
