Bears Open Outdoor Season at UTSA Relays

SAN ANTONIO - The Baylor track teams opened their 2000 outdoor season at the Whataburger/UTSA Relays in San Antonio. The squads brought home a combined 20 first place finishes.
For the men, high jumper Marcus Swiat won his event with a provisional mark of 7-2 1/4. Other individual winners included Charley Donaldson in the pole vault (16-6), Tre Gardner in the 100 meters (10.39) and the long jump (24-6 1/2), Peter Hauser in the 400 meters (47.25), and Michael Smith in the 110 meter hurdles (14.33)and the 400 meter hurdles (51.50). Baylor took the top spot in the 4x200 meter relay (1:24.57), the 4x800 meter relay (7:35.81) and the 4x400 meter relay (3:07.08).
On the women's side, Baylor took home three field event titles. Brandi Harris won the long jump (19-11 1/2), while Laci Lewis-Tindle did the same in the high jump (5-7 3/4) and Rachal Roessler captured first in the shot put (41-11 1/4). Other individual winners included Keisa Brown in the 400 meters (54.82), Cecilia Jeverstam in the 3000 meters (10:21.31), Nzingah Kamani in the 100 meter hurdles (14.05), and Ssereta Lafayette in the 100 meters (12.34). The Bears won three of the four relay races with a mark of 46.90 in the 4x100 meters, 1:39.09 in the 4x200 meters and 3:42.64 in the 4x400 meters.
Next weekend the Bears will host their first home meet of the season with the Dr Pepper Invitational. The one-day event begins Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Hart/Patterson Track and Field Complex.
