Bears Take Eight First Place Awards at Sooner Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. - The Baylor track team opened their 2000 indoor season with a strong showing at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla. Baylor took home two first place finishes on the women's side and six on the men's side.
The men's mile relay set a provisional time of 3:10.30 on their way to a first place finish. Other athletes on the men's team who did well, include Jon Capron who won the 800 meters (1:54.28) and the mile (4:18.76), Jim Autenreith who took the pole vault title (16-5), and Brandon Couts won the 600 yards (1:09.63). Junior-transfer Floyd Thompson, competing in his first meet with Baylor, finished second in the 600 yards with a time of 1:10.18. Peter Hauser and Bayano Kamani also did well placing third (48.76) and fourth (48.79) respectively in the 400 meters.
On the women's side, Barbara Petrahn won the 600 yards (1:20.63), while Kara Newton (5:04.87) and Leah Marbach (5:11.00) finished first and second in the mile. Baylor's mile relay team took second with a time of 3:46.65.
"We performed well for the opening meet of the season. Several of our athletes are ready to move to the next level as far as their performances this weekend. The men's mile relay got off to a great start and we think they will continue to improve," head coach Clyde Hart said.
Baylor will return to action Saturday at the Houston Indoor Classic hosted by the University of Houston.
