COLUMBIA, Mo. - In the first day of action at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, sophomore Kara Newton racked up Baylor's first points by placing second in the 10,000 meters. Her time of 35:13.22 is the fifth best mark in school history and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"We're proud of Kara. She ran a smart race and gave us some early points, which is always nice," head coach Clyde Hart said.
In the multi-events, junior heptathlete Kerry O'Bric ended the first day of competition in third place with 3,270 points. She clocked a 14.45 in the 100 hurdles, cleared 5-04.50 in the high jump, threw 41-03.25 in the shot put and ran a 25.17 in the 200 meters.
"Kerry did a great job today. She set some personal bests and really came on strong in the first day of competition," Hart said.
O'Bric will compete tomorrow in the long jump, triple jump and 800 meters. Last season at the Big 12 Championships, she finished eighth in the heptathlon.
Decathlete Jeff DaCunha is in 11th place with 3,521 points. Tomorrow he will participate in the 110 hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
At the end of day one competition, Nebraska leads the women's race with 26 points, followed by Colorado with 24. Baylor is seventh with Newton's eight points from the 10,000 meters.
Nebraska also leads the men's race with 19 points, while Texas A&M is second with 15. Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech did not score any points on the first day of competition.
