WACO, Texas - Danielle Crockrom scored 14 second-half points and 18 overall to lead Baylor to a 69-48 women's basketball win over Texas-Arlington in the Ferrell Center Sunday afternoon.
Baylor led 32-23 after a sluggish first half, but the Lady Bears turned up the defensive pressure and worked the ball inside to Crockrom to pull away for the win.
"I didn't think we were ready defensively in the first half," Baylor coach Sonja Hogg said as the Lady Bear record went to 3-3. "The intensity wasn't there. Give UTA credit. They took it to us. But we responded in the second half."
Crockrom opened the second half hot and by the time she hit a jumper withh 14:28 to play, Baylor had taken a 19-point lead at 48-29.
The Lady Bears' Stasha Richards, who came off the bench to finish with 11 points on a 4-for-5 shooting night, drained a three-pointer to make it 63-37 with 5:26 remaining.
UTA, 3-3 on the season, countered with Lalila Darez, who led all scorers with 25 points. "She took the team on her shoulders and lifted everybody around her," Hogg said. "She's a very goo player."
Tasha Arnold was the only other Maverick in double figures. She finished with 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
UTA, depleted at the guard spot due to injuries and ineligibilities, wound up with 33 turnovers.
"We've got to learn not to turn it over." UTA coach Mike Dean said. "I thought we played hard, we're just a little short-handed. We've got kids playing guard who aren't supposed to be out there.
"The first 10-15 minutes we played well. Our depth was not as good as theirs. We only played six people."
The Mavericks whot 42.1 percent while Baylor finished at 50 percent.
"I have tremendous respect for Sonja Hogg. They have a young team and they're getting better. They have good players. This is a Big 12 school and they paid us money to come down here to play them," Dean said.
