WACO, Texas - The Nebraska Huskers took an early lead and steadily built it to beat the Baylor Lady Bears 82-71 on Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
The Huskers (13-11, 7-6 Big 12) scored first, but the Lady Bears (6-17, 1-12 Big 12) hung close for most of the first half, even leading briefly at 23-21 around the six-minute mark of the first half. Three free throws by Stasha Richards cut the lead to one at 29-28 with under two minutes left in the half, but that would be as close as Baylor would get. The Huskers led at the half, 36-32.
Nebraska continued to build their lead in the second half, going up by as much as 15 with just less than four minutes to go in the game. The Lady Bears made a push and cut the difference to nine with 1:44 remaining, but the Huskers hung tough for the win.
"Our offense in the second half attacked them inside out," Nebraska head coach Paul Sanderford said. "I thought we moved the ball pretty well."
"I thought the kids battled," Baylor head coach Sonja Hogg said. "They hung together, got up and down the floor, and played as tough as they could."
Five Baylor players finished with double-digit scoring totals, the first time the Lady Bears have done that this season: Danielle Crockrom (22), Hilary Akromis (14), Monica Arnold (12), Richards (11) and Mandy Hayworth (10). Nebraska had four of their own in double digits: Brooke Schwartz (18), Charlie Rogers (16), Nicole Kubik (15) and Melody Peterson (14).
The Lady Bears were in foul trouble all night, Arnold and Richards fouled out in the last three minutes, while Hayworth and Nicole Collins had three fouls apiece for much of the game.
"We were trying to wear Collins down," Sanderford said. "It was token pressure most of the night. We also tried to go with some numbers, hopefully wear them down a bit."
"With Mandy and Nicole as our ball handlers, and having them in foul trouble, it caused us some trouble," Hogg said.
The Lady Bears' next game is their final home game of the season, as they host Colorado on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
