WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's basketball schedule is finalized and features 14 home games, the perennially strong Big 12 conference and three television dates, head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson announced today.
The Lady Bears open on the road with trips to Boston and Lafayette, La. Baylor will face Miami (Ohio) in the first round of Boston University's Tournament and will match up against either BU or Yale in the second game then will play at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The Lady Bears will open up the home part of their schedule on Nov. 28 when they host Bethune-Cookman College. Non-conference travel ends when Baylor travels to Colorado to play the Air Force Academy and the University of Denver then it' s back to the friendly confines of the Ferrell Center for five straight games to conclude non-conference action.
As usual, the Big 12 Conference will pose the program's biggest obstacle. Seven Big 12 teams saw postseason action last year, six teams in the NCAA Tournament and one in the WNIT. Iowa State, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech received 2000 NCAA Tournament bids. Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech advanced to regional competition with Tech playing in the Elite Eight. Three teams played in a regional for the first time in the Big 12's four years of existence. Missouri made an appearance in the WNIT.
Five of Baylor's first seven conference games are against NCAA Tournament teams. The Lady Bears open conference play at home against Oklahoma State then play three straight games against NCAA Tournament participants (Kansas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma), play at Texas A&M then double up against NCAA tourney teams Iowa State and Texas.
The Lady Bears will appear on FOX Sports Net three times. Two games will be on the road while one will be a home game. Jan. 20 is their first televised game when they travel to College Station to take on the Aggies of Texas A&M. BU's second TV game will be the matchup between Colorado and the Lady Bears in Boulder then Baylor will host Missouri on Feb. 17.
"The Big 12 is one of the best conferences in the nation," commented Mulkey-Robertson. "The quality of women's basketball is outstanding. There is no game you can play and be assured a win. This can be attributed to great coaching and each school's commitment to their women's basketball program."
