COLUMBIA, Mo. - It took them 15 years to do it but better late than never for the Baylor Bears as they posted their fifth straight Big 12 win by defeating the Missouri Tigers 2-1 in Columbia today.
The Bears hadn't beaten the Tigers since the 1985 season and never in Big 12 play. Baylor freshman pitcher Joni Miller threw a six-hitter and struck out three to win her fourth straight game and move her record to 14-10 on the year.
While Missouri's two pitchers Stephanie Falk and Ingrid Werner held the Bears to just two hits on the day, a single by Heather Williams and a double by Kristen Lancaster, the Bears capitalized on a throwing error in the seventh to score the winning run.
Missouri got on the scoreboard first when, in the bottom of the first inning, Stacy Gemeinhardt singled to third base and stole second. She moved to third on a groundout and scored on Linda Swartz' sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Tigers held the lead until the fourth when Sarah Sharp walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sharp moved to third on Sarah Caudle's grounder to second and scored on Kristen Lancaster's double to left center.
In the top of the seventh catcher Ryan Stukel led off the inning with a walk. She took second on Stacey Hundley's sacrifice bunt. Summer Rohde reached first on a fielder's choice and Stukel scored the game winner when Missouri tried to turn a double play and threw the ball into the Tigers' dugout, allowing Stukel to score.
The Bears dodged a bullet in the bottom of the seventh when with bases loaded and two out, Miller got Missouri's Gemeinhardt to fly out to left field.
The victory gave the Bears their fifth consecutive Big 12 win and raised their record to 27-28 overall and 7-10 in conference play. The Tigers fall to 30-25 on the season and 5-12 in league play.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
