COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Being ahead two games to none and having a 13-9 lead in game three was not enough for Baylor as Texas A&M turned in a stunning comeback to defeat BU, 3-2 (13-15, 11-15, 16-14, 15-9, 15-9), Wednesday night in College Station.
Baylor (21-7, 9-6 Big 12) got out on top 2-0 when senior outside hitter Elisha Polk tallied two kills on the game's first two plays. However, A&M (20-5, 11-4 Big 12) went on a roll and took a 10-4 lead when BU's attempts were going long off the court.
Down 13-5, the Bears went on a scoring binge with 10 unanswered points to take the game 15-13. Baylor turned their miscues into kills and it was TAMU who committed the errors. Polk recorded nine kills in the frame and sophomore setter Dana Chuha was solid with seven digs.
The Bears got out to a commanding 9-0 start in the second game before Texas A&M put a point on the board. A&M rallied to pull within 10-5 and 12-8, but BU's frontline play was too much for the Aggies and the Bears rolled 15-11.
Kia Young was strong at the net collecting six kills and Tatiana Kenon added five.
The third game started off close as both team traded multiple kills and blocks before TAMU crept out to a 5-3 lead. After the Aggies went up 6-4, the game became a hard-fought battle as the next 12 combined serves by both teams resulted in one Baylor point.
A&M got their lead back to 8-5 before Baylor made a comeback to take the lead 10-8. The game stayed close as BU's 13-9 advantage turned into a 14-14 tie. The Aggies completed the 16-14 comeback when Young's attempt went wide on game point.
In game four, the score would go back and forth until Baylor took control 9-3. Texas A&M then mounted a huge comeback scoring 12 consecutive points to win the game 15-9. BU only managed 11 kills on 55 attempts in the game for a .091 percentage.
After Baylor got the first point in game five, the Aggies then scored five straight points, forcing the Bears to call time. Baylor closed the gap to 10-7, but that was as close as the team would get. A&M capped the comeback with a 15-9 win marking the second time this season that Baylor had a two games to none lead before losing.
Polk had 26 kills to lead BU and Young added 25. Polk also led the way with 24 digs and Dana Atkinson had 23.
Amber Woolsey had a match-high 28 kills for the Aggies and Summer Strickland had 18. Strickland also led the team with 23 digs and Celia Howes had 20.
Polk moved up two spots into fifth place all-time in NCAA history with her 461st consecutive game played. She also moved into ninth all-time with 5,260 total career attempts. Polk needs just 21 more kills to tie for 15th all-time.
