WACO, Texas - Baylor avenged an earlier loss to Kansas by defeating the Jayhawks, 3-0 (15-9, 15-11, 15-13) Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
Baylor (22-7, 10-6 Big 12) swept this contest after Kansas (17-10, 8-8 Big 12) had swept the previous matchup on October 9 in Lawrence, Kansas.
Elisha Polk, Sunny Nicholas and Tatiana Kenon started BU off hot in game one, combining for 17 kills and a .696 hitting percentage.
BU jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but the Jayhawks came back to tie the score at 6-6 and 7-7. Baylor got back up 11-7, but KU scored the next two points forcing BU to call time. Baylor regrouped and closed out the game 15-9.
The Bears were even hotter in the second game, streaking out to a lead of 10-2 behind more kills from Polk and Nicholas. However, a stubborn Kansas team crawled back into the game and cut the deficit to 10-7. Baylor would not relinquish the lead as they ended the game on a big block by Kenon and Kirsten Berg.
In that game, Kenon had seven consecutive serves go for points, including two aces.
Kansas turned the tide in game three, going up 6-2 before Baylor called timeout to stop the momentum.
After one more KU point, Baylor made its move closing within 8-7 and then tying the score at 9- 9.
The Bears would take their first lead of the game at 10-9, but Kansas did not let up, taking a 13-11 lead of their own. BU did not back down, taking the last four points of the game to record their 15th sweep of the season, extending the school record.
Polk was outstanding in the deciding frame, tallying 12 kills while Kia Young was solid in the back row collecting six digs.
Polk finished with a match-high 23 kills, while Young and Kenon both had 11 for the Bears. Young led the squad with 16 digs and Dana Atkinson added 12. Baylor, who is last in the conference in blocks, recorded nine on the evening.
Amanda Reves and Amy Myatt had 14 kills apiece for the Jayhawks to lead the team. Molly LaMere had a match-high 17 digs and Reves added 12.
