WACO, Texas - It took five games to do it, but the Baylor Bears volleyball team downed No. 14 Texas A&M, 3-2 (11- 15, 15-6, 15-10, 6-15, 15-12), before 1,218 fans Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center in Waco.
This was the third win for BU over ranked Texas A& M in the last four years.
The Bears were led by seniors Elisha Polk and Kia Young. Young had a match-high 26 kills and Polk matched her season-high with 26 digs. Sophomores Tatiana Kenon and Sunny Nicholas added 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
This is the second time all season that four players recorded double- digit kills and the first time six players tallied double-digit digs.
The Aggies (12-3, 3-2 Big 12) started game one off hot, going up 9-0 before Baylor could get on the board. BU cut that lead to 10-6 and eventually 11-9, but the Aggies rolled from there taking the game 15-11. TAMU out-hit Baylor .279 to .136 in the match-opening game.
Game two was a different story as the Bears (15-3, 3-2 Big 12) turned an early 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish. After going up 12-5, Baylor put it into cruise control, taking the game, 15-6, and tying the match at one game apiece. The hitting percentages changed dramatically as Baylor hit .375 for the game compared to Texas A&M's .041.
The Bears came out firing in game three, building a lead of 7-2 before exchanging points from there for a 15-10 win. Young moved out of the negative and into the positive for hitting percentages during this time. She had five kills and six errors through two and a half games before finishing with 26 kills, 11 errors on 77 total attempts.
Texas A&M got their revenge in game four as they broke open a close game and turned it into a rout.
The Bears kept it close for a while trailing only 5-4, but A&M cruised from there hitting .280 for the game and winning 15-6.
The Aggies then got the upper hand in the fifth game by going up 6-2 early on. But after a Baylor time out, the Bears rallied to take an 8-7 lead. TAMU came back and took the lead back 10-9. Baylor then scored the next three points and never trailed again for the 15-12 win and the match victory.
Last year in Waco, Baylor gritted out a five-game victory over the fifteenth-ranked Aggies 3-2 where game five went to Baylor 20-18.
Texas A&M was led by Amber Woolsey who had a team- high 25 kills. Michelle Cole (23), Celia Howes (22) and Summer Strickland (20) all had at least 20 kills. Jenna Moscovic added 68 assists.
In the match, several season and career highs were set or tied. Polk tied a season-high and Baylor season-high in digs (26), Young's 77 attempts were the second highest total on the year and three away from the school record. Dana Chuha tied a career-high set earlier this year with 69 assists, and Kenon tied a career-high in kills (13) and set a new career-high in attempts (34).
