LAWRENCE, Kansas - The University of Kansas won their third consecutive Big 12 match as they swept Baylor 15-10, 15-9, 15-11 in Lawrence.
Kansas (13-4, 4-2 Big 12) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first game when Baylor hit three consecutive errors to open up the match. The Jayhawks then went ahead 5-1 and 8-4 before Baylor rallied to take a 9-8 lead. However, that was the only lead the Bears would have as Kansas rolled to a 15-10 win.
BU (15-4, 3-3 Big 12) registered several unassisted kills on Jayhawk overpasses, but the Bears were overshadowed by KU's taller front line and was out-blocked 3-0. Mary Beth Albrecht had six kills for Kansas while Elisha Polk and Sunny Nicholas had five each for Baylor. The Jayhawks also out-hit the Bears .439 to .149 in the game.
The errors kept mounting for Baylor in game two as Kansas built leads of 5-1 and 10-4. BU made it interesting though. Down 14-6, the Bears reeled off three straight points to cause Kansas to timeout. That was all Baylor was going to get as KU won game two 15-9.
Again Kansas out-hit Baylor .289 to .184 in the game. Polk for BU added five more kills while Tatiana Kenon and Dana Atkinson had four digs each. Albrecht added four kills for Kansas and Nancy Bell and Amanda Reves collected four each.
The Bears got their biggest lead of the night when they started off the third game by scoring the first three points. Kansas got back into the game by tying the score at 5-5 and again at 7-7 before taking the lead at 8-7. Baylor regained the lead at 9-8 and the game would go back and forth as both teams traded multiple kills before the Jayhawks took the game and the match 15-11.
Albrecht led all players with 17 kills, while Amy Myatt and Reves had 16 and 15 kills respectively for Kansas. Polk tallied 16 kills for Baylor while Atkinson had a match-high 16 digs.
The Jayhawks out-hit the Bears on the night .370 to .200. This was the highest hitting percentage on the year for any Baylor opponent and BU's hitting percentage was the third lowest on the year.
In the effort, sophomore setter Dana Chuha recorded her 1,000th career assist. Her 1,014 assists currently ranks her seventh all-time at Baylor.
