DES MOINES, Iowa - Baylor's women's volleyball team took out a little frustration here Friday night, defeating Iowa State 30-16, 30-18, 30-20 to end a four-match losing streak. With the victory, the Bears improve to 9-4 on the season and 1-4 in the Big 12 Conference. Iowa State falls to 3-8 and 0-6.
The Bears struggled to get their offense going, hitting just .173 on the night. However, Baylor was stingy on defense, the Bears tallied 57 digs and nine blocks while holding the Cyclones to a negative .033 attacking percentage. Baylor out-killed ISU 37-24 and held the Cyclones to just 36 digs.
Tisha Schwartz was the star for the Bears, hitting .500 on the night with eight errorless kills in 16 swings. She also had a team-high five blocks. Stevie Nicholas matched Schwartz for the match high in kills with eight to go along with 10 digs. It marked just the second time in her career (at Nebraska last season) that Stevie Nicholas failed to reach double figures in kills.
Laura Daniela Lloreda added seven kills with a match-high 11 digs and four service aces. The Bears, who lead the Big 12 in service aces per game, totaled nine on the night. Sunny Nicholas also had seven kills and four blocks, and Sarah Braga came off the bench for 10 digs. Dana Chuha posted her 25th-career double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs.
After ISU scored the first point of the match, Baylor built a 5-1 lead. The Cyclones then scored two points before Kimmy Scott served a school-record 10 consecutive points to give Baylor a commanding 15-3 lead. From there, ISU never got within 10 points. The 16 points scored by ISU is the second-lowest point total allowed in a game this season by the Bears. Baylor hit just .189 in the opener, but tenacious defense and a strong block allowed the Bears to hold ISU to a negative .186 clip.
Baylor tallied five service aces en route to the second-game victory, two from Lloreda. Leading 6-5, Baylor scored four straight points and never looked back. Schwartz was 3-0-5 (.600) in the game, while Sunny Nicholas was 3-1-4 (.500).
In game three, the Cyclones hit .000 (10-10-42). Schwartz continued her hot streak, going 3-0-6 (.500), while Sunny Nicholas was 4-0-6 (.667). Tied 5-5, the Bears scored five straight points and led the rest of the way. ISU closed to within five points and 24-19 but could never get any closer.
Baylor will play again Saturday in Columbia, Mo., taking on Missouri at 7 p.m. The Tigers will enter the match at 11-3 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12 after falling 30-15, 30-24, 35-33 Wednesday night at No. 2 Nebraska. The Bears are 6-4 all-time against Missouri, but the Tigers have each of the last three meetings.
