CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (AP) - Mire Chatman hit two long 3-pointers to seal Texas-Pan American's 72-66 victory over Baylor in the championship game of the Carolina Shootout on Saturday night.
The Broncs (10-3) overcame a 17-point deficit in the final 17 minutes.
Texas-Pan American had a 67-62 lead after Chatman hit his first 3-pointer with 1:44 left. After a turnover by Baylor (9-2), and with the shot clock running out, Chatman launched a 25-foot shot that went in with a minute to play.
Chatman scored 20 points for the Broncs, who have won five straight games. Chatman scored 76 points in the three games and was the tournament MVP.
Andrius Sakalys added 14 points for Texas-Pan Am, while Kevin Mitchell had 12, including three 3-pointers.
Freshman John Lucas had 16 points to lead Baylor, which hasn't won an in-season tournament since 1993. Lawrence Roberts, another freshman, had 15 points and Wendell Greenleaf had 14.
Baylor had a 50-33 lead when Lucas made a 3-pointer with 17:14 left. The Bears still had an 11-point lead when Greenleaf scored on a layup after taking a pass from Roberts with 10:55 left.
Texas-Pan Am then scored 12 straight points, going ahead 60-59 on Chatman's 3-pointer with 7:43 left. Baylor led just one more time, never getting back in front when Sakalys scored inside with 5:42 left for a 62-61 lead.
It was the second day in a row that Texas-Pan Am had a big comeback. The Broncs came back from an early 15-point deficit to beat Oral Roberts 67-58 Friday and advance to the title game.
After six early lead changes, the Bears went ahead 17-15 when Lucas made a 3-pointer midway through the first half. Baylor stayed ahead and extended the lead to 41-28 by halftime.
