FIGHT FOR THE FINISH...
Baylor's Athletic Department kicked off a "Fight for the Finish" campaign to support the Lady Bear basketball team in their final home game of the season. Four goals have been set and require extensive fan involvement:
-With a current record of 19-7, a turnaround from the 7-20 mark of last season, the Lady Bears are fighting for a first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
-The Lady Bears need 4,800 fans at their last home games to break the all-time attendance mark. That record was set in the 1998-99 season, which included four postseason contests.
-The Big 12 Conference is sponsoring a Million Fan March with the goal of becoming the first women's basketball conference to reach 1,000,000 fans. At this point, the Lady Bears have had 43,891 fans pass through the turnstiles. Baylor has surpassed their goal (29,000) for the Million Fan March and was the first Big 12 school to achieve their goal.
-The Lady Bears currently rank 21st in the nation in home attendance. The goal is to rank among the top 20 in the nation at season's end.
The last home game of the season, Feb. 28 against Kansas State will be Million Fan March night. One lucky fan will be chosen to as the "Honorary Millionth Fan" and will have the opportunity to win a trip to the Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament and to shoot for $100,000.
Other promotions for the Kansas State game include a pregame tent party with food provided by Baylor Dining Service. Baylor students can get a hot dog, chips and drink for free and others may purchase the meal for $2. Also, anyone wearing a gold t-shirt will be admitted free of charge.
LAMBERT HONORED AGAIN...
Baylor's Sheila Lambert was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week in a vote of a media panel for games played Feb. 19-25. The honor is Lambert's third Rookie of the Week selection and she was named Player of the Week earlier in the season. Lambert, a 5-7 guard, led all scorers last week in road games at Oklahoma and Nebraska with 23 against the Sooners and 22 versus the Huskers. In addition, she dished out 11 assists and stole the ball nine times. Lambert averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 steals for the week. The Seattle, Wash., native was an impressive 84.6 percents (11-of-13) from the charity stripe and 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the floor.
THE TEAMS...
For the second straight week, the Lady Bears are ranked #24. It is the fifth time the Baylor squad has been ranked this season, their highest being #20. The Lady Bears, 19-7 overall and 8-7 in Big 12 play, come into Wednesday's game after defeating Nebraska, 77-57, in Lincoln on Saturday. The Lady Bears are 11-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play in the Ferrell Center, their only losses coming at the hands of Oklahoma (87-90) and Texas Tech (56-67).
Baylor is led by three players scoring in double figures. Sheila Lambert, a junior guard, leads the team with 23.0 a game, while right behind her is junior forward Danielle Crockrom's 21.4. Senior post Monica Arnold checks in at 10.3 a contest. Crockrom leads the Big 12 Conference in rebounding with 12.0 a game.
The Kansas State Wildcats are 12-14 on the season and 2-13 in Big 12 play. Their two Big 12 wins have come in Manhattan over Texas (72-63) and Texas A&M (60-55). The Wildcats are 0-7 on the road in Big 12 games and 5-8 away from home this season. Center Nicole Ohlde, a 6-4 freshman, leads Kansas state in both scoring and rebounding with 17.6 points and 8.2 rebounds a game. Also averaging double figures in scoring is Kristin Rethman (5-9, junior guard) at 11.8 and Kim Woodlee (5-8, junior guard) with 10.5.
THE COACHES...
Baylor's Kim Mulkey-Robertson, in her first year as a head coach after 15 years as an assistant at Louisiana Tech, has guided the Lady Bears to a 19-7 record. A tremendous improvement over Baylor's 7-20 record of last season.
The Wildcats' Deb Patterson is in his 5th season at Kansas State as head coach after serving 10 years as an assistant at Vanderbilt, Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. She possesses a career record of 71-74.
SERIES RECORD...
Kansas State leads the series 4-2, with five of the six games coming since the inception of the Big 12 Conference. Both of Baylor's wins have come in Waco.
LAST YEAR...
With the two squads in opposite divisions, they only play once a season. Last year in Manhattan the Wildcats posted a 73-58 victory. WIldcat returnees Kim Woodlee and Kristin Rethman each scored in double digits with 12 and 11 respectively. Stasha Richards and Brittany Bruns were the only Lady Bears to post double-digit scores. Richards scored 17 while Bruns contributed a career-high 15 points.
