WACO, Texas - Baylor's Michelle Neely, Nicole Collins and Hilary Akromis were three of 50 student-athletes who have been named to the 2001 Women's Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's basketball academic all-league squad consisted of 37 combined first-team members with 13 on the second team. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
Michelle Neely, a 6-2 senior post majoring in social work, earned first-team honors on her first try. Since she was a junior college transfer last season, the Plano native wasn't eligible. Collins, a point guard, is majoring in forensic science while Akromis, a San Antonio native, is majoring in human performance.
