THE TEAMS...
The Lady Bears, 15-5 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 play, come into Wednesday's game after dropping two road games last week. The Baylor squad lost at Oklahoma State on Thursday in overtime (69-66) then lost at #23 Colorado on Saturday (86-66) in a game at noon. Baylor is led by three players scoring in double figures. Sheila Lambert, a junior guard, leads the team with 22.9 a game while right behind her is junior forward Danielle Crockrom's 22.6 a game. Senior post Monica Arnold checks in at 10.6 a contest. Crockrom leads the team in rebounding with 12.9 a game.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are 17-3 on the season and 8-1, currently tied for the Big 12 lead with Iowa State and Oklahoma. Four Raiders manage double-digit scoring averages. Freshman guard Jia Perkins averages a team-leading 13.7 points, sophomore forward Plenette Pierson scores 13.4, Katrisa O'Neal, a senior guard, averages 11.6 and Amber Tarr 10.9. Pierson is the team's top rebounder with 7.8 a contest.
Baylor is 9-1 in the Ferrell Center this season. Their lone loss came against Oklahoma by three points, 90-87. The Red Raiders possess a 4-2 road record.
THE COACHES...
This coaching matchup features the rookie against the veteran. Baylor's Kim Mulkey-Robertson, in her first year as a head coach after 15 years as an assistant at Louisiana Tech, has guided the Lady Bears to a 15-5 record. A tremendous improvement over Baylor's 7-20 record of last season.
Texas Tech's Marsha Sharp is in her 19th season as a head coach, all at Texas Tech. She possesses a career record of 451-137.
SERIES RECORD...
Texas Tech leads the series 40-8 including an 84-61 victory in Lubbock on Jan. 10. They have won 37 straight meetings. The Lady Bears haven't won a game against the Raiders since posting a 62-56 victory on Mar. 11, 1983 in the SWC Tournament in Austin. Baylor has not won in Waco since Feb. 13, 1982. The Red Raiders narrowly escaped defeat in the Ferrell Center when they pulled out a 51-49 victory on Jan. 2, 1999.
EARLIER THIS YEAR...
Texas Tech handed the Lady Bears their first loss of the season when they defeated Baylor 84-61 in Lubbock on Jan. 10. Tech's Jia Perkins led all scorers with 23 points while Plenette Pierson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jolee Ayers came off the bench to score 12 points. For Baylor, Sheila Lambert, Danielle Crockrom and Monica Arnold each scored in double figures with 25, 15 and 10 respectively. Arnold was Baylor's top rebounder with eight.
