WACO, Texas - Joni Miller started in the circle and won both games for Baylor on Saturday as the 21st-ranked Lady Bears swept a doubleheader from Northwestern State, 6-2 and 4-1.
Baylor (25-7) upped its home record this season to 4-0 with the pair of wins. The Lady Bears took both ends of a doubleheader against Oklahoma City on Feb. 20 in the team's only other home games so far this season. The Demons dropped to 9-7 on the year.
For the day, Miller totaled 13.0 innings, striking out eight and walking two. She allowed 15 hits but just the three wins while notching her 15th and 16th victories of the season to go with three losses.
In Game 1, the Lady Bears trailed 2-1 through three innings before scoring one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the 6-2 victory. Ryan Stukel had three hits and two RBI, including the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Naomi Fitzgerald and Koral King each added a pair of hits, and Fitzgerald scored twice in the game.
Baylor jumped out in front in Game 2 with a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning. A walk, a hit batsman, a strikeout victim who reached on a passed ball and an error by the Northwestern State catcher allowed the Lady Bears to score their three runs on just two hits.
Two innings later, the Lady Bears added an insurance run to go up 4-0. Sarah Caudle walked, stole second and third base, and scored on Koral King's squeeze bunt. The Demons scored once in the sixth, but Miller allowed nothing else en route to her 10th complete game of the season.
The Lady Bears and Demons will square off in the third game of the series Sunday at 11 a.m. The start time was moved up from the originally scheduled 1 p.m. start time due to the threat of inclement weather.
