WACO, Texas - The Baylor baseball team racked up 12 runs on 18 hits to cruise past Big 12 foe Missouri 12-2 in seven innings in the first contest, but lost 5-4 in 10 innings in the late game Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
The first game was the completion of Saturday's suspended game that was delayed by five hours due to rain and then suspended in the first inning to a layer of fog on the field.
With the split, Baylor moves to 14-5 on the season, 4-2 in Big 12 conference play. Missouri is now 4-7-1 and 1-5.
In the early game, Baylor jumped on the board with a run in the first inning when Chris Durbin singled in Trevor Mote. The Bears opened the second inning with six straight hits that sparked nine runs. David Murphy led off with a single and advanced on a balk. Mark Saccomanno then smacked a double to centerfield to score Murphy. Tim Hartshorn followed with a well-placed bunt single to put runners at first and third. Mote ripped a double down the right line to bring Hartshorn and Saccomanno across and put the Bears up 4-0. The scoring barrage continued as Baylor scored six more runs to cap off the inning.
Missouri countered with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but Baylor reliever Paul Thorp tossed a hitless seventh inning to close the door on the Tigers.
Baylor starter Josh Scott (3-1) went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out three batters. Missouri starter Matt Hobbs (2-2) gave up seven runs on nine hits in one inning of work for the loss.
In afternoon game, Baylor scored first when Mote, batting second, drilled a home run off the foul pole to give the Bears a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning. Missouri tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second, but Baylor responded with a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, Durbin led off with a double down the left line, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Shoppach. The Tigers tied the game at 4-4 a run in the seventh inning. They used excellent pitching from reliever Ryan Stegall and a run in the 10th inning to secure the win.
Bears closer Zane Carslon (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run on three hits in two and two-thirds innings. Pete Sansone (1-1) scattered three hits over four innings of work to earn the win for Missouri, while Stegall got the save.
Baylor returns to action Tuesday night with a non-conference game against Houston. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
