LADY BEAR TOURNAMENT HISTORY...
The Lady Bears enter the fifth Big 12 Tournament as the tournament's sixth seed. Baylor is 1-4 in Big 12 Tournament action. Their lone win was against Oklahoma State in the 1997 Tournament. They subsequently loss to Kansas in the second round.
1997 - Defeated Oklahoma State (68-62), lost to Kansas (66-54)
1998 - Lost to Kansas State (71-66 ot)
1999 - Lost to Missouri (60-55)
2000 - Lost to Nebraska (82-61)
Twice in Big 12 Tournament history the Lady Bears have lost in the first round to a lower seed. In 1998 Baylor was the No. 6 seed and lost to No. 11 Kansas State. In 1999 No. 7 Baylor lost to No. 10 Missouri.
THE TEAMS...
For the second straight week, the Lady Bears are ranked #24. It is the fifth time the Baylor squad has been ranked this season, their highest being #20. The Lady Bears, 20-7 overall and 9-7 in Big 12 play, come into Tuesday's game after defeating Kansas State, 74-57, in Waco last Wednesday. The Lady Bears are 2-0 on neutral courts and 6-5 on the road this season.
Baylor is led by three players scoring in double figures. Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 first team selection Sheila Lambert, a junior guard, leads the team and the Big 12 Conference with 22.9 a game. Right behind her is All-Big 12 first teamer junior forward Danielle Crockrom's 21.7. Senior post Monica Arnold checks in at 10.5 a contest. Crockrom leads the league in rebounding with 11.9 a game.
The Kansas State Wildcats finished regular season play at 12-15 and 2-14 in Big 12 play. Their two Big 12 wins came in Manhattan over Texas (72-63) and Texas A&M (60-55). The Wildcats are 5-9 away from home this season and 1-1 on neutral courts. Center Nicole Ohlde, a 6-4 freshman and the Big 12's Freshman of the Year, leads Kansas state in both scoring and rebounding with 17.5 points and 8.1 rebounds a game. Also averaging double figures in scoring is Kristin Rethman (5-9, junior guard) at 11.9 and Kim Woodlee (5-8, junior guard) with 10.6.
THE COACHES...
Baylor's Kim Mulkey-Robertson, in her first year as a head coach after 15 years as an assistant at Louisiana Tech, has guided the Lady Bears to a 20-7 record. A tremendous improvement over Baylor's 7-20 record of last season. It is the best turnaround in NCAA Division I this season.
The Wildcats' Deb Patterson is in her fifth season at Kansas State as head coach after serving 10 years as an assistant at Vanderbilt, Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. She possesses a career record of 71-75.
SERIES RECORD...
Kansas State leads the series 4-3, with six of the seven games coming since the inception of the Big 12 Conference. All three of Baylor's wins have come in Waco.
EARLIER THIS YEAR...
The two squads last meet less than a week ago (Wed., Feb. 28) in Waco. In the Lady Bear's 74-57 victory, Danielle Crockrom, Sheila Lambert and Monica Arnold combined for 62 of Baylor's 74 points. Crockrom poured in 29, Lambert 19 and Arnold, playing in her final game in the Ferrell Center, posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Arnold also blocked a career-high six shots. Nicole Ohlde led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding with 15 points and six boards.
