LADY BEAR TOURNAMENT HISTORY...
The Lady Bears entered the fifth Big 12 Tournament as the tournament's sixth seed. Baylor is 2-4 in Big 12 Tournament action. Prior to defeating Kansas State yesterday, their lone win was against Oklahoma State in the 1997 Tournament. They subsequently loss to Kansas in the second round.
1997 - Defeated Oklahoma State (68-62), lost to Kansas (66-54)
1998 - Lost to Kansas State (71-66 ot)
1999 - Lost to Missouri (60-55)
2000 - Lost to Nebraska (82-61)
2001 - Defeated Kansas State (60-44)
THE TEAMS...
Baylor comes into the game versus Iowa State having won six of their last seven games. The Lady Bears are 21-7 overall and finished Big 12 play at 9-7. They have won 21 games for the first time since the 1980-81 season. For the third straight week, the Lady Bears are ranked #24. It is the sixth time the Baylor squad has been ranked this season, their highest being #20. They come into Wednesday's game after defeating Kansas State, 60-44, in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. The Lady Bears are 3-0 on neutral courts and 7-5 on the road this season.
Baylor is led by three players scoring in double figures. Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 first team selection Sheila Lambert, a junior guard, leads the team and the Big 12 Conference with 22.6 a game. Right behind her is All-Big 12 first teamer junior forward Danielle Crockrom's 21.6. Senior post Monica Arnold checks in at 10.2 a contest. Crockrom leads the league in rebounding with 11.9 a game.
The Iowa State Cyclones finished regular season play at 22-5 and 12-4 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones come into the tournament as the No. 3 seed and are currently ranked #13 in the AP Poll and 10th in the Coaches Poll. The Cyclones are 7-5 away from home this season and 1-0 on neutral courts. Four Iowa State players score in double figures. Center Angie Welle, a 6-4 junior, leads the Cyclones in both scoring and rebounding with 18.1 points and 10.1 rebounds a game. Also averaging double figures in scoring is Lindsey Wilson (5-9, sophomore guard) at 14.9, Megan Taylor (5-11, senior guard) with 14.3 and 6-1 junior guard Tracy Gahan at 12.3.
THE COACHES...
Baylor's Kim Mulkey-Robertson, in her first year as a head coach after 15 years as an assistant at Louisiana Tech, has guided the Lady Bears to a 21-7 record. A tremendous improvement over Baylor's 7-20 record of last season. It is the best turnaround in NCAA Division I this season.
The Cyclones' Bill Fennelly is in his sixth season at Iowa State as head coach, he is 133-49 there. He needs one more victory to reach the 300 win plateau, he is 299-102 in 13 years as a head coach.
SERIES RECORD...
Iowa State leads the series 3-2, with all five games coming since the inception of the Big 12 Conference. Both of Baylor's wins have come in Waco, the two teams have never met on a neutral court.
EARLIER THIS YEAR...
Baylor posted a 79-74 win in Waco on Jan. 24, handing the Cyclones their first Big 12 loss of the season. Danielle Crockrom led four Lady Bears in double figures with 25 point-12 rebound performance. Monica Arnold added 13, Jessika Stratton tallied 12 and Sheila Lambert added 11 points and eight assists. Megan Taylor led Iowa State with 22 points.
MORE HONORS...
The duo of Sheila Lambert and Danielle Crockrom have claimed their second All-America selection of the season. Women's Basketball Journal named Lambert to its third team while Crockrom was named to their fourth team.
MORE RECORDS...
Danielle Crockrom broke the Big 12 record for most rebounds in a season when she hauled down 11 against Kansas State. She now has 332 for the season, the old record of 330 was set by Texas Tech's Keitha Dickerson in the 1999-2000 season. In addition, she now holds the league record for most double-doubles in a season with 18. Texas' Edwina Brown held the previous mark, set in 1999-2000, with 14.
