WACO, Texas - Justin Taylor tossed his first career complete game, scattering two runs on six hits as the Baylor baseball team cruised past Kansas State 10-2 Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, the Bears improve to 24-9 overall and 12-3 in Big 12 play, while the Wildcats fall to 11-17 and 3-12.
Baylor got things going early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning after the first two batters in the order, Chris Durbin and Trevor Mote, walked to put runners in scoring position. After double steals, Durbin came in on a wild pitch and Mike Huggins' infield single scored Mote.
The Wildcats responded in the second, scoring their only two runs of the day off a two-run single by Mark English. The Bears continued to pound away at the Kansas State pitchers, scoring a run in the third and one in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
After scoring three more runs in the fifth, Kelly Shoppach led off with a double down the left line in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. Two batters later, Huggins belted a double to bring Shoppach across and Tim Hartshorn followed with an extra-base hit to centerfield to score Huggins. David Murphy wrapped up the inning with an RBI single to left field to put Baylor up 10-2.
Making just his fourth career start, Taylor improved to 4-1 on the season and struck out eight batters. Kansas State starter Jared Brite (1-1) worked two innings, giving up three runs on one hit for the loss.
Shoppach's 24-game hitting streak is the second-longest in Baylor history. The longest, 31, was recorded by James Blair over the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
The Bears return to action Wednesday when they travel to Houston. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Cougar Field.
