Two Women Student-Athletes Named Academic All-District

WACO, Texas - Baylor student-athletes Kerry O'Bric and Melanie Hagewood have been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VI Women's Spring At-Large teams, the College Sports Information Directors announced Tuesday. O'Bric, a senior track and field athlete, was one of 10 athletes to earn first-team honors, while Hagewood, a sophomore golfer, was selected to the 10-member second team.
The school record holder in the heptathlon with 5,481 points at last week's Big 12 Conference Championships, O'Bric finished sixth at the 2000 NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. She carries a 3.75 grade point average in chemistry and is currently ranked 14th in the NCAA in the heptathlon. O'Bric was a first-team academic all-Big 12 selection this season.
Hagewood led Baylor's 32nd-ranked women's golf team with a 77.0 stroke average this season. She is currently ranked 96th nationally in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf rankings after posting three top-five and five top-10 finishes during the 2000-2001 school year. Last fall, Hagewood led Baylor to the team title at the Wolverine Invitational in Michigan. A 2001 Big 12 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll member, she sports a 3.97 grade point average in mechanical engineering.
All district honorees are eligible for the academic all-America team which will be announced at a later date.
