Golfer Melanie Hagewood Earns Prestigious Honor

Baylor's Melanie Hagewood received the 2001 Dinah Shore Trophy Award sponsored by the LPGA Foundation it was announced today in Florida. Hagewood was presented the award at the annual National Golf Coaches Association's (NGCA) Women's Golf Banquet. The banquet was held in conjunction with the 2001 NCAA Women's Golf Championship at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.
Hagewood, a sophomore from Clarksville, Tenn., was selected for her outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, community service and golf. As part of the Dinah Shore Trophy Award, Baylor's women's golf program will receive a $7,000 grant in Hagewood's name.
The mechanical engineering major carries a grade point average of 3.98 and leads the 32nd ranked Baylor squad maintaining a 77.00 scoring average. Her academic honors include the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, South's Women Engineers (SWE), Italian Club Honors and the Dean's List (five consecutive semesters). In addition, she is a two-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, was named second team academic all-district this season and was also named second-team All-Big 12.
Besides her achievements in the classroom and on the golf course, Hagewood has also been involved in community service during the last three years. She has held offices in Baylor's Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), taught golf skills during the Central Texas Special Olympics and participated in weekly visits to a local nursing home. She also spearheaded the golf team's participation in Bowl for Kids Sake, which raised funds for the Big Brother-Big Sister Foundation. In addition, Hagewood is an alternate for the NCAA Student-Athletes Leadership Conference at Disney World on May 29-31.
Hagewood, accompanied by Baylor women's golf head coach Sylvia Ferdon, received a crystal replica of the actual Dinah Shore Trophy from Dr. Betsy Clark, the LPGA's director of education and research.
