Volleyball: Gold Dominates Green

WACO, Texas - A crowd of more than 500 saw the Gold team defeat the Green team 30-21, 30-28, 30-21, 30-23, 12-15 here Saturday night in Baylor's annual Green and Gold volleyball match. The Gold team, which actually wore white jerseys, was comprised of the projected starters, while the Green team was comprised of the remaining team members and the coaching staff.

Sophomores Tisha Schwartz and Laura Daniela Lloreda guided the Gold team to victory. Schwartz put down 10 kills and hit .444 on the match with four blocks, Lloreda, a transfer from Universidad de las Americas in Mexico, had 10 kills and 12 digs with a match-high seven service aces.

Fellow sophomore Stevie Nicholas led the Gold team with 14 kills to go along with 12 digs and five service aces. Setter Dana Chuha tallied nine kills against only one error to hit a match-high .533, she also had 40 assists and seven digs.

Freshman setter Jillian Mazzarella paced the Green team with 34 assists and 11 kills, while fellow freshman Kara Kennedy placed four service aces. Carol Selman put down a pair of blocks, and Sarah Braga had four kills and nine digs.

Fans had the opportunity to see the Baylor coaching staff display its skills on the court. Assistant coach Frank Gray put down a match-high 19 kills, hitting .417, with 11 digs and five blocks, while head coach Brian Hosfeld added 15 kills and nine digs. Assistant coach Tiffany Carrethers had six kills and five blocks.

"I think this was a fun night, both for the team and the fans," Hosfeld said. "We're seeing definite dividends from our training in Japan. We're getting to more balls on defense and playing at a higher tempo. What was rather chaotic a few weeks ago is more organized now."

Baylor will begin the regular season next weekend at the Nokia Sugar Bowl Tournament hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans, La. The Bears will open the campaign Aug. 31 at 4:30 p.m. against Nevada-Las Vegas with matches against Louisiana State and the host Green Wave the following day.
