NEW ORLEANS, La. - Stevie Nicholas, Tatiana Kenon and Tisha Schwartz all reached the 10-kill plateau to propel Baylor's women's volleyball team to a 30-27, 30-17, 30-25 victory over Louisiana State here Saturday at the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic hosted by Tulane.
With the victory, Baylor moves to 2-0 on the young season, the Bears are the only undefeated team remaining in the tournament. LSU falls to 1-1, and both teams have one match remaining.
Baylor was in danger of dropping the third game to the Tigers. However, trailing 25-24, the Bears rattled off six consecutive points to close out the match. After struggling to a .182 attacking percentage in the first game, Baylor ended the match at .298. That turnaround was keyed by a 20-2-36 (.500) second game.
Stevie Nicholas led all players with 13 kills, she also had 10 digs for her second-consecutive double-double to open the 2001 season. Schwartz added 10 kills and hit .444 (10-2-18). She and Kenon, who put down 12 kills, led the Bears with three blocks each. Laura Daniela Lloreda tallied a match-high 13 digs, while Sunny Nicholas hit .500 (7-2-10). Carol Selman came off the bench for four errorless kills in seven swings (.571).
Meanwhile, the Bears held the LSU to little offense. No Tiger had more than eight kills, and no Bayou Bengal reached the 10-dig plateau. As a team, LSU hit just .198, despite Meagan Davis and Lauren Cuyler combining for 11 errorless kills.
Baylor will continue action here Saturday, taking on host Tulane in the tournament finale at 8.
