WACO, Texas - All midweek Big 12 women's volleyball contests, including Baylor's Wednesday night match at Iowa State, were postponed Tuesday by the Big 12 Conference due to the terrorist events in New York and Washington, D.C. No decision has been made yet regarding this weekend's athletic events, including the Baylor football team's road game at Minnesota Saturday night.
"In light of our national tragedy, we as a league decided it best to postpone our Wednesday night volleyball matches," Baylor Athletics Director Tom Stanton said.
"While our thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured or lost loved ones in these attacks, we also realize that it would be good for all of us to continue with as many scheduled events as possible in order to help with the healing process. We'll take our cue from President Bush and his leadership on whether these other events proceed as scheduled."
The nation's Division I-A conference commissioners have a midday teleconference scheduled for Wednesday to address intercollegiate athletic event issues.
Baylor's football team, which conducted its normal afternoon practice session Tuesday, is scheduled to take a chartered flight to Minneapolis Friday.
"Obviously, the entire nation's travel plans are on hold at the moment, and rightly so," Stanton said.
The Baylor-Iowa State volleyball match, along with the other league contests postponed, will be made up at a later date.
"Something like this puts things in perspective," head volleyball coach Brian Hosfeld said. "We met as a team and discussed everyone's views on the situation. Some of our players have friends in college in New York City, so they are naturally concerned about the matter. This is indeed an historical tragedy for our country."
