Baylor travels to Houston, Texas for the Houston Indoor Invitational Sat, Jan. 19 at the Bill Yeoman Field House. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the first track races set for 12 p.m. The last field event is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., while the races will conclude at 5:30 p.m.
Big field awaits Baylor in Houston
The 2002 Houston Invitational will include 16 college and university teams. Of the 16 teams represented four on the men's side and two on the women's side are ranked among this week's Trackwire Top 25. Ranked men's team's include (#5) TCU, (#11) Texas, (#15) SMU, and (#25) Baylor, while (#13) Rice and (#19) Texas comprise the women's ranked teams that will be in attendance.
BU in the rankings
Baylor's men's indoor track and field team is currently ranked 25th in the nation with eight points in the latest Trackwire Top 25 poll. The Bears share the No. 25 slot with four other universities including Big 12 foes Oklahoma and Kansas, as well as Auburn and Idaho. Tennessee is ranked No. 1 with 44 points, while Alabama and Louisiana State round out the top three with 41 and 39 points, respectively.
Last time out
The Bears opened the 2001-2002 indoor season Dec. 1 with a solid performance at the Oklahoma All-Comers Meet in Norman, Okla. Baylor won seven races between the men's and women's squads. For the men sophomore Nick Devenport came away with two individual titles winning both the 800 meter race and the mile run with times of 1:56.08 and 4:15.37, respectively. 2001 All-American Jim Autenreith posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault in his first outing of the season, clearing a height of 17-0 3/4. Keeping with tradition Baylor was well represented in the 400 meters, grabbing two of the top three spots, as freshman Darold Williamson finished second (48.69) and sophomore Joel Martin placed third (48.83). The men also grabbed a first place finish in the 4x440 yard relay posting a time of 3:14.79, besting second place Oklahoma by nearly six seconds. The Baylor women matched the men's accomplishments also claiming top honors in the 4x440 yards clocking a time of 3:51.07. On the women's side senior Lanie Millar paced the Bear squad claiming the individual title in the 800 (2:14.71) and placing second in the mile run (5:02.02). Seniors Barbara Petrahn and Alisha Hooker also came away with first place finishes for Baylor as Petrahn won the 600 yard race (1:22.72) and Hooker took top honors in the 600-meter high hurdles (8.84). Other Lady Bears to finish in the top-three included freshman Lakadron Ivery who placed second in the 60 meters (7.65) and third in the 200 (25.17), and senior Chava Demart who ran to a second place finish in the 400 (57.05).
Hart begins 39th season at the helm
Clyde Hart begins his 39th season as the head coach of Baylor's track and field program this season. In his tenure at BU, Hart has firmly established the Bear program as one of the best in the nation. Hart has coached athletes to 23 national championships (11 individual/12 relay) and 429 All-American awards (143 individual/286 relay). Named the men's assistant coach for Team USA at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Hart has coached athletes to ten world record performances. In 1996, he was named the Coach of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee. That year he coached Michael Johnson to gold medals in the 200 meters and the 400 meters at the Games of the 26th Olympiad in Atlanta, Ga. Hart was also named the NCAA Indoor Coach of the Year in 1996 after garnering such honors in 1989. A four-time Southwest Conference Indoor Coach of the Year, Hart has established Baylor as "Quarter Mile University," after producing 14 4x400 relay national champions and four 400 meter national champions.

WOMEN
Chava Demart * Sr.-2L * 400, 400H
A three-time All-American... Ran the second leg on Baylor's 4x400 team that placed fourth at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships (3:34.36)... Finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at the USA Outdoor Championships (57.23)... Established school record times in four of her last five 400-meter hurdle races... Her career-best time of 57.05 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships was good enough for a second-place finish at the conference meet... Ran 57.77 at the NCAA Championships.
Lanie Millar * Sr.-2L * 800
Etched her name in the Baylor record books posting a school record time of 2:06.66 in the 800 meters at the Cardinal Invitational... Earned all-Big 12 accolades placing second in the event at the outdoor championships with a time of 2:08.29... Won the 800 crown at four regular season meets (Tellez Invitational, Michael Johnson Classic, Dr Pepper Invitational, and the UTSA Relays).
Kara Newton * Sr.-3L * Distances
Earned all-Big 12 accolades in the outdoor 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters clocking times of 17:11.80 and 36:27.79, respectively... Finished seventh in the 10,000 meters with a provisional mark of 34:38.77 at the Mount Sac Relays... Won the 5,000 at the Dr Pepper Invitational posting a time of 17:42.97... Turned in a second-place finish in the 5,000 at the Texas Relay recording a season-best outdoor time of 17:10.66.
Barbara Petrahn * Sr.-3L * 200, 400
Has earned All-American honors eight times during her career at Baylor... Earned he second individual All-American award placing fifth in the 400 meters at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships... Ran the anchor leg for Baylor's 4x400 relay team that placed fourth at the national meet clocking a time of 3:34.36... Shattered the school record in the 200 meters during the preliminaries of the Big 12 Championships posting a time of 22.92... Finished third in the 200 meter finals at the conference meet, running 23.22.
Tiffany Wise * So.-1L * 400, 800
Earned All-American status as a member of Baylor's 4x400 relay team... Ran the opening leg during the team's fourth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (3:34.36)... Her split of 54.10 helped the Bears to a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships (3:34.40)... Posted a season-best 400-meter time of 54.79 for a third-place finish at the Texas Invitational... Ran 54.91 for a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
MEN
Jim Autenreith * Sr.-2L * Pole Vault Earned All-American honors clearing a height of 17-4 1/2 to place sixth in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Championships... Reached NCAA provisional qualification standards in four of his five performances during the spring... Best clearance was 17-8 1/2 which earned him a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships... His second-place showing marked a career-best conference finish.
Michael Smith * Sr.-2L * Hurdles, Sprints
Five-time All-American... Placed second in the 400-meter hurdles to teammate Bayano Kamani at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (49.34)... Ran the 400 hurdles in 49.83 to finish second at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships... Ran the third leg at the outdoor conference meet as Baylor claimed its fourth 4x400 conference title in five years, posting the nation's fastest time (3:02.92) in that event... Earned all-Big 12 honors with a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters at the indoor conference championships... Member of the Baylor's 4x400-meter relay time that finished second at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 3:04.74... Ran 46.00 in the second leg of that race... Also ran the second leg in 46.34 as Baylor won the Big 12 indoor title in the 4x400 (3:06.79)... Zsolt Szeglet * Sr.-2L * 200, 400 A three-time All-American... Lead leg for Baylor's 2001 national championship 4x400-meter relay team (3:03.89)...
