LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Junior Jared Theodorakos carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and finished with a one-hitter as Baylor beat Southern California at Dodger Stadium for the second straight day Saturday, 8-1.
Theodorakos (1-1) held the Trojans hitless for seven-and-a-third innings before allowing a single to center field on a 2-2 count to third baseman Jon Brewster. Theodorakos got the next two batters out on a fly ball to center and a strikeout to get out of the eighth. The junior hit one batter in the ninth before recording the complete game.
Baylor (3-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one half-inning against USC starter J.P. Howell (1-1). Three of the first four batters reached base, and Jared Clements drove in the Bears' first run on a groundout. Michael Griffin then hit the first pitch he saw up the middle for a two-RBI single. The ball rolled under the centerfielder's glove and to the wall, allowing Griffin to circle the bases for Baylor's fourth run.
USC (2-4) got back a run in the bottom of the first when a long drive by Alberto Concepcion popped out of the glove of Chris Durbin for a two-base error, allowing Brian Barre to score from second.
In the sixth, the Bears put up another four-spot. Paul Richmond led off the inning against reliever Chad Clark with a 380-foot blast to right center for his second home run of the weekend. Three walks and two more hits led to three more runs, with Trey Webb and Mike Huggins each driving in a run on a single.
Theodorakos struck out a career-high 11 batters in recording his first collegiate complete game. He walked just three and gave up only the one hit.
Hartshorn was one of three Bears to record two hits on the day and extended his hitting streak to six games.
Baylor and USC square off one more time Sunday, again at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is set for noon PT (2 p.m. CT).
