WACO, Texas - The No. 8 ranked Baylor men's tennis team won its sixth straight match of the season by defeating the University of South Alabama, and this also marks the third straight win over a nationally ranked team in the 2002 season. The Bears are now 6-0 on the season while South Alabama falls to 4-4.
In national rankings released today, the Bears stayed at No. 8.
For the second straight week the Bears won the doubles point over a nationally ranked team which was led by Papp/McGregor in a 8-6 thriller. In singles competition Marcus Hornung had no problems with Vincent Baudat in a 6-2, 6-2 sweep and Zoltan Papp fought hard after losing his first set to come back and win big in the last two sets 6-7 (7-1), 6-0, 6-1.
The most impressive performances of the night was turned in by freshman Benjamin Becker. Becker was down early to Kosta Zinchanka of South Alabama 4-6, and was down 2-5 in the second set in which he stormed back to win in a tie breaker 7-6 (7-4), and then finished Zinchanka off in the third set with no a decisive 6-2 victory.
Tonight was the last home tune-up before Big 12 play begins on Sunday Feb. 24 when the Bears host the University of Nebraska at 12:30 p.m. at Baylor's Tennis Center.
