Box Score
AUSTIN, Texas - Baylor starter Steven White carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but in the end had to settle for a no-decision as ninth-ranked Texas came from behind to beat No. 17 Baylor on Saturday at Disch-Falk Field, 4-3.
Texas (14-3, 1-1 Big 12) scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to come from behind and even the series with Baylor (8-5, 1-1).
The two teams battled through unusually frigid wintry conditions, with a temperature of 40 degrees at game time and a 20-MPH north wind blowing from left to right that produced a wind chill closer to the low 20s.
Baylor took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. First baseman Mike Huggins blasted a shot through the stiff wind and over the left field fence for a solo homer, his second long ball in two days.
In the fourth, the Bears added another run. Ross Bennett's hit-and-run single through the right side plated Trey Webb, who had led off the inning with a first-pitch double.
Baylor went up 3-0 in the sixth. With one away, Paul Richmond reached on an infield single, and Huggins followed with a double to left that put two men in scoring position. Ross Bennett then hit a sacrifice fly to center that drove in Richmond for the three-run cushion.
Texas did not have a baserunner until the sixth, when Michael Hollimon walked leading off the inning. White retired the first 15 batters he faced and 18 of the first 19, but ran into trouble in the seventh.
Eric Sultemeier reached on an error by the third baseman to start the inning. After one out, J.D. Reininger recorded the first hit of the game for Longhorns, a double to left center that put two men in scoring position. Dustin Majewski followed with a single to right that drove in both runners and cut Baylor's lead to 3-2.
White went seven innings, allowing just the two hits and striking out five. Kyle Edens (1-2) relieved to start the eighth and hit the first batter he faced on a 1-2 count. After a fielders' choice and a ground-out gave the Longhorns a runner on second with two outs, Sultemeier hit a blooper to center that just glanced off shortstop Webb's glove and fell for an RBI single to tie the game. Sultemeier then stole second and scored when Ryan Hubele followed with a single to right, putting the Longhorns on top for the first time all day at 4-3.
That lead would hold, as the Bears put one man on in the ninth on an error but were unable to do anything more. The game was played in a quick two hours and two minutes.
Longhorn starter Justin Simmons (4-0) went the distance for the men in orange, striking out eight and scattering seven hits.
Baylor and Texas return to Disch-Falk Sunday for the final game of the series, game time is set for 1 p.m.
