This is another "B" Line column, a periodic collection of news items of interest to members of the Baylor "B" Association. Contribute news about you or your teammates via e-mail to Dutch Schroeder (Dutch_Schroeder@baylor.edu), Reba Cooper (Reba_Cooper@baylor.edu) or Jack Loftis (Jack.Loftis@chron.com). The mailing address is Baylor "B" Association, P. O. Box 8120, Waco, TX 76714.
GOLFING FOR A FRIEND - Yet another Baylor golf event is scheduled for April and this one holds a special place in the hearts of former teammates and friends of Cary Ward, who played football for the Bears in the mid-1980s. Ward has Huntington's Disease and last year the first Cary Ward Golf Tournament raised almost $15,000 for research into the causes and possible cures for the nervous disorder that destroys a victim's ability to feel, think or move. The second annual tournament is scheduled for April 26 at Waco's Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. Arrangements are being handled by Ben Perry, David Bell and Doug Still. For more information contact Perry at 254-772-6074 (office) or 254-744-3993 (cell phone) . . . The Texas Daily Newspaper Association has presented its Fred Hartman Excellence in Sports Writing Award for 2002 to veteran journalist Bob West of the Port Arthur News. The award is named for the late Fred Hartman, once the chairman of Southern Newspapers, Inc., and editor and publisher of The Baytown Sun. Hartman was a BU graduate, a benefactor in the construction of the Castellaw Communications Center and an unconditional booster of Baylor athletics . . .
TIME IS RUNNING OUT - Ken Dunlap reminds the "B" Line that all planning to attend the April 20 Track Reunion Luncheon in the "B" Association Room should make their reservations by April 12. The noon event is open to all former track athletes, guests, friends, neighbors or anyone else who RSVPs and shows up with $10. Dunlap says BU track coach Clyde Hart is planning to break away from the annual Michael Johnson Track Meet and speak at the luncheon. To make your reservation contact Reba Cooper at the "B" Association office (254-710-3045) . . . Ben Perry, who helps the "B" Association keep up with former Bear football players from the early 1980s, has just learned that Marty Block, a center on the 1983 and 1984 teams, died on Jan. 22. Marty, wife Melissa and son Grady lived in Kansas. Marty had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and soon knew his condition was terminal. But before his death he established a 529 College Plan for Grady. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund or get more information may contact Missy (9012 Ensley Lane, Leawood, KS 66206) or Perry (see earlier reference in this column) . . .
PENNEY ON BOARD - The "B" Line is pleased to announce that Kyle Penney, the director of Operations/Regional Services for the Baylor Alumni Association, is the new co-chair of the "B" Association's Communications Committee and will be involved in pursuing the organization's goal to make the "B" Web site the best of its kind on the Internet. Penney received his Baylor letters as a 1987-89 student football manager . . . Doug Smith, executive director of the Bear Foundation, is happy to see an increased number of Baylor letter winners becoming members of the organization and also volunteering to help in the current fund drive. "Obviously letter winners have more feelings towards the athletic program then others and I would love to have a lot more of them as members," Smith said. Anyone wanting to volunteer or join - letter winner or not - may contact Smith at 254-710-2582 or 1-800-BAYLOR-U opt. 7. Send e-mail messages to Bear_Foundation@baylor.edu . . . Mike Thomas, a 1962-1966 football letter winner, was victorious in the Republican Primary election for judge in Tarrant County's Criminal District Court No. 4. He defeated his only GOP opponent by receiving 77 percent of the vote, but must face the Democratic nominee in November. With the Democratic Party literally vanishing from the higher judicial benches in Dallas and Harris County over the past few years, one might consider Thomas to be a shoo-in. But - then again - one might also recall the final moments of the 2000 Baylor-UNLV football game at Floyd Casey Stadium and decide the election should still be conducted . . .
