WACO, Texas - Baylor track and field head coach Clyde Hart announced the signing of seven athletes to national letters of intent to compete for the Bears during the 2002-03 season today. The group, which features three athletes on the men's side and four athletes on the women's side, is highlighted by local talent Jamen Sazuri of Waco.
Sazuri, a senior from Waco High School, will help fill a void of short sprinters on the men's team that Baylor has done without the past two years.
"We have missed having a top sprinter in our program for the last couple of years," said Hart. "Jamen is an extremely talented athlete that will immediately be able to help us in that area. We are excited that he chosen to stay close to home and become part of our program here at Baylor."
Sazuri won the 2002 district title in the 100 meters and is a two-time district champion in the 200 meters (2001 and 2002). He currently owns PR marks of 10.22 and 21.00 in the 100 and 200 meters, respectively.
The only junior college transfer in the group, Brian McDonald will come to Waco from Kansas City, Mo. McDonald spent the last two years at Kansas Community College and will enroll at Baylor as a junior in the fall. He attended Clear Creek High School in Kansas City where he finished fourth in the state in the 800 meters during his senior season.
Rounding out the field of men's signees is Jeremy Wariner out of Arlington, Texas. The Lamar High School senior finished third in the 400 meters at the 2001 5A state championships and is the reigning district champion in the 200 and 400 meters. He joins the Bears having posted personal-best times of 21.16 in the 200 and 46.40 in the 400.
"Jeremy fits extremely well into our program at Baylor," said Hart. "We believe he is one of the top recruits in the country and are excited that he has chosen to come to Baylor that has a rich tradition in his specialties, the 200 and the 400."
Headlining the group of women signees is Angela Marvin from Humble, Texas. The Bears only distance athlete to sign in the spring, Marvin finished second at the 2001 cross country state championships and fourth at the state meet in the 3,200-meter run. Marvin is a two-time district champion in both the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters and has posted PR times of 5:01 and 11:03, respectively in those events.
Baylor also nabbed two athletes from the San Antonio area in Shanta Bibbs and Janelle Mulkey. A Tom Clark High School senior, Bibbs won the 2002 district championships in the 200 meters, 400 meters and the high jump after finishing fourth in the high jump and eighth in the 400 meters in 2001. Mulkey, out of East Central High School, finished sixth in the region in the 100-meter high hurdles in 2001 after placing third in the district the year before.
The Bears final spring signee, Marquisha Sefas, hails from Trimble High School in Fort Worth, Texas. Sefas is the current district champion in the 200 meters and owns a personal-best time of 23.54 in the event.
"Overall we are delighted with the young athletes we have signed this spring," said Hart. "It's an outstanding group of individuals that we believe are some top recruits in the nation. These athletes will fill some holes we have in our program right now and will enhance our team immediately in the upcoming year."
In addition to these seven spring signees, Hart expects to ink at least one more athlete for the men's team and possibly two to three more athletes for the women's team.
