Men's Tennis Claims Big 12 Tournament Title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 6th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 4-2 in the championship match of the Big 12 Tennis Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Texas A&M Tennis Center. The win gives the Bears their first tournament title, Baylor also won the regular season Big 12 championship.
The Bears are now 25-1 on the season which breaks the program's record for most victories in a season and extends their record-setting win streak to 16 matches.
The Aggies took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Derrick Bauer and Ante Matijevic posted the first victory when they defeated Matias Marin and Reiner Neurohr at No. 3, 8-4. Lester Cook and Ryan Newport, ranked 15th nationally, defeated Nathan McGregor and Markus Hornung at No. 1, 9-8 (3).
Needing to win four of the six singles matches, the Bears went to work. Freshman Benjamin Becker quickly dispensed with Ryan Newport at No. 1, 6-4, 6-0 and Reiner Neurohr took No. 5 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Zoltan Papp then claimed the Bears' third point when he posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2. The Aggies would get what would prove to be their last point of the day when Khaled El Dorry defeated Armando Carrascosa in three sets at No. 6.Then, sophomore Matias Marin's win at No. 4 ensured a victory for Baylor with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Ante Matijevic.
"It was a championship performance by both schools today. They really forced us to dig deep down. Today's win was a really big step for our program. Hopefully we can build on this heading into the NCAA's," said head coach Matt Knoll.
The Bears now await the NCAA Tournament selections which will be announced on Thurs., May 2 at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
