Waco, Texas - Bob Trott, who has 21 years of college and five seasons of NFL coaching experience, was hired as Baylor's defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, Head Coach Kevin Steele announced Tuesday. Trott replaces former defensive coordinator and secondary coach Paul Jett, who quit coaching for personal reasons in late April.
"Bob is a talented and knowledgeable defensive coach," Steele said. "He has worked with the secondary his entire career and will bring a tremendous amount of experience to coaching that position.
"This wasn't the best time of year to have to go find a coordinator, but I'm pleased we have been able to hire someone like Bob, who has his level of experience and has been a division I-A coordinator at more than one school."
Trott, a long-time assistant to current Rice head coach Ken Hatfield, spent six seasons at Air Force (1978-83), six years at Arkansas (1984-89) and one season at Clemson (1990).
As secondary coach at Arkansas, Trott helped the Razorbacks to six bowl berths and a pair of Southwest Conference titles (1988 and 1989) and recruited the state of Texas. He took over as the Hogs' defensive coordinator his final season in Fayetteville. Trott served as Hatfield's defensive coordinator at Clemson in 1990 as the Tigers led the nation in total defense, allowing just 217 yards a game.
In 1991, Trott moved to the NFL's New York Giants for two seasons before joining Bill Parcell's New England Patriots staff as secondary coach for three years (1993-95).
Trott, 48, returned to college coaching in 1996 as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Duke, where he spent the last six seasons.
After lettering three seasons at North Carolina, Trott began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 1976-77. A native of Kannapolis, N.C., Trott and his wife, Barbara, have three children, Amanda (21), Nathan (18) and Brittany (14).
Baylor opens the 2002 season Aug. 31 at California.
