WACO, Texas - Steffanie Blackmon is one of four athletes added to the 2002 USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials roster, bringing the total to 38 of the nation's top 20-and-unders for this weekend's USA Basketball Trials. Following the three-day Trials, which will be held May 17-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee will select finalists for the 12-member 2002 USA World Championship For Young Women Qualifying Team.
Added to the list were: Seimone Agustus (Capital High School/Baton Rouge, La., Steffanie Blackmon (Baylor/Dallas), Toccara Williams (Texas A&M/Hollywood, Fla.) and Aminata Yanni (Illinois/Machesney Park, Ill.)
Blackmon is the third Baylor player selected to attend the USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials. Former Baylor standouts Sheila Lambert and Danielle Crockrom both attended the Trials last season. As a freshman for Baylor last season, Blackmon appeared in 32 games ... Was the first player off the bench for the No. 7 Lady Bears ... Played behind All-American and first round WNBA draftee Danielle Crockrom ... Averaged 10.0 points and 5.2 rebounds a game ... Led the team in blocked shots with 38, ranked second on the team in rebounding and third in scoring (behind two All-Americans)... Named the team's most improved player ... Ranked No. 7 in the Big 12 in blocked shots ... Scored in double figures in 12 games ... Produced two double-doubles ... Scored a career-high 21 points against Bucknell and pulled down 12 rebounds against North Texas for a career high ... Led the Lady Bears in rebounding in six games ... Blocked three shots in a game five times ... Blocked a career-high four shots against Bucknell.
The 2002 USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials begin Friday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. (all times MDT). Sessions will follow at 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday,May 18; and the Trials will conclude on Sunday, May 19 with sessions beginning at 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Finalists for the 2002 USA Young Women squad will be announced by the Committee in the morning of May 20.
