WACO, Texas - Tisha Schwartz pounded 16 kills with three blocks and hit .361 for the match, and Kelly Spriggs had 10 kills with only one error in 15 swings (.600) as the Baylor volleyball team concluded preseason drills here Saturday with the annual Green and Gold Match.
Schwartz and Spriggs joined Stevie Nicholas, Lisa Smith, Laura Daniela Lloreda, Jillian Mazzarella and Kara Kennedy to comprise the Gold team. Emily Huston, Stella Odion, Sarah Braga and Marisa Kersten teamed with assistant coaches Frank Gray, Tiffany Carrethers and Jaimie Lee to make up the Green team.
Aided by a .358 team attacking percentage, the Green team won four of five games. Braga led the Green team defensively with 19 digs. Kersten added 12 digs, while Stella Odio had seven kills, five digs and four service aces. Huston tallied three kills, six digs, a pair of blocks and 49 assists.
Nicholas led the Gold team with 18 kills to go along with 19 digs and five service aces. Lisa Smith chipped in with 11 digs, Lloreda had eight kills and 14 digs, and Mazzarella had three kills, 11 digs a pair of blocks and 35 assists. Kennedy finished the day with seven digs and two aces.
"There was a lot of high energy out there today," Baylor head coach Brian Hosfeld said. "There's still work to done, but we're all ready for the season to get started. We'll be tested right away, but that should give us a chance to see exactly where we are."
Baylor opens its 2002 season next weekend at the Mizuno Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The Bears face Oral Roberts at 5 p.m. CDT Friday. Baylor plays a pair of matches Saturday, taking on Loyola-Chicago at 1 p.m. CDT and 2001 national runner-up Long Beach State at 9:30 p.m. CDT.
