KINGSTON, R.I. - Stevie Nicholas had 17 kills and 10 digs, and Tisha Schwartz added 14 kills and three service aces as Baylor defeated Rhode Island 30-25, 31-29, 31-29 here Friday night in first-day action of the URI Classic. The Bears improve to 4-3 on the season with the win, while the Rams fall to 3-4.
The win did not come easily, though, as the Bears were forced to overcome a four-point deficit in game one and seven-point deficits in both games two and three. Still, Baylor's 12 service aces were too much for Rhode Island, which hit just .183 as a team.
Nicholas hit .333 for the match, while Emily Huston added four errorless kills in 10 swings. Schwartz led all Baylor players with three blocks; she was one of six Bear to record a block on the evening.
Trailing 14-11 in the opener, the Bears scored six consecutive points to take a 17-14 lead and control of the game. URI pulled to within one at 19-18, but the Rams could never recapture the lead as the Bears took game one 30-25.
Baylor trailed by as much as seven points on three different occasions. Down 17-10, the Bears began to fight back, scoring 10 of the next 14 points to pull within one at 21-20. Rhode Island regained control of the game and put Baylor on the ropes at 28-25; however, the Bears scored four straight points to take their first lead of the game at 29-28. URI withstood one game point but could not hold off another as Baylor took the game 31-29.
The Bears found themselves behind much of game three, too. However, trailing 23-16, Baylor closed out the game on a 15-6 run for the dramatic 31-29 victory.
Baylor returns to action tomorrow with a pair of matches at the URI Classic. The Bears face Northeastern at 11:30 a.m. CDT and Utah State at 3:30 p.m.
