HOUSTON, Texas - Scoring eight places deep and only the top two individuals from each school Baylor track and field opened the 2003 indoor competition season on Saturday at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Track and Field Meet hosted by the University of Houston at the Bill Yeoman Field House.
Baylor's distance teams saw outstanding performances from both the men's and women's side. Nick Devenport set a meet record clocking a time of 4:16.69 to win the mile run. Bo Price took second place in the event with a time of 4:17.24. In the women's mile race, Steffanie Bennett finished fourth recording a time of 5:13.94. Kyle King also set a meet record with a first-place time of 8:20.42 in the 3000-meters. Matt Chance placed sixth with an 8:45.00. Debbie Thornhill ran a 9:42.79 in the 3,000-meters to finish second followed by Leah Marbach, who finished third with a time of 10:12.47. In the 5,000-meters, Megan McCoin recorded a 17:53.86 to take second, and Anna Kaczmerek took fourth with an 18:47.51.
Another distance title came from the women's distance medley relay team. The Bears paced the field clocking a time of 12:03.61.
Once again, the men had stellar 400-meter races as Baylor athletes recorded four of the top seven times. All-American Darold Williamson took second place (47.63) and Jeremy Wariner finished fourth (48.47) to earn points for the men's team. In the 4x400 relay the Baylor "B" squad took fourth place with a time of 3:18.02. In the 800-meter race, newcomer Will Fitts clocked a 1:52.36 en route to a second place finish. In the women's 800, Jordan Willmann finished seventh (2:21.09) and Holly Moser took eighth (2:21.78).
In the field events All-American April Holliness scored for the women in both the long jump and the triple jump. With a leap of 19'-7.5", she finished second in the long jump. She measured a 39'-9" to finish seventh in the triple. Matt Linn long jumped for the men, taking eighth place (21'-9.5").
Baylor track and field will return to action next weekend when Coach Hart's squad travels to Lubbck, Texas for the Texas Tech Red Raider Classic Sat., Jan. 25.
