Volleyball Falls to #8 Nebraska, 3-0

WACO, Texas - Baylor played a solid defensive match, but couldn't muster enough on offense as it fell to eighth-ranked Nebraska, 3-0 (30-24, 30-23, 30-26), in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center. Senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz hit .244 for the match with 15 kills and 13 digs for her fifth-straight double-double and 11th overall for the season. Only two other players in program history, Stevie Nicholas and Elisha Polk, have put together strings of five consecutive double-doubles.
Freshman middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young hit .286 with 10 kills, while freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakula, sophomore outside hitter Kelly Spriggs and freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc each had six. The Bears (11-11, 3-6 Big 12) outdug the Huskers (16-3, 8-2), 62-50, as four players had double-digit digs. In addition to Schwartz, Emily Huston led the team with 14 digs and 39 assists for her sixth double-double, while Vakulya had 12 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Marisa Kersten added 10.
Anna Schrad led Nebraska with 15 kills and had six digs, while Jennifer Saleaumua chipped in with 10 kills and a match-high 18 digs. The Huskers outblocked the Bears, 10-3, with Melissa Elmer leading the way with six, and they also outhit the Bears, .254-.163.
Baylor jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game one as Huston served four-straight points, but Nebraska fought back and took an 11-9 lead. The Bears then ripped off five more points to go up, 14-11, but the Huskers responded and tied the game at 14-14. Baylor held its last lead at 20-18, when Nebraska scored four-straight and went on to win the game, 30-24. The Huskers hit .245 in game one, compared to .146 for the Bears.
Nebraska got off to a quick start in game two, taking a five-point lead that it would never relinquish. The Huskers, who hit .222 held as much as an eight-point lead at 28-20 and went on to take a 2-0 lead with a 30-23 decision as the Bears hit .167.
The Bears came back strong after the break, scoring the first four points of the game behind the serve of LeBlanc. Baylor kept a four-point advantage until 12-8, but Nebraska tied the game at 13-13. There were four more ties until the Bears went up, 21-18, but Nebraska rebounded once more to tie the game, 22-22. Nebraska, which hit .292 in the final frame, went up 28-24 as the Bears hit .179 and held on to close out the match, 30-26.
Baylor returns to action when it hosts No. 22 Texas A&M on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
