BU's Rakhmanchik posts team-high 19 kills as Bears roll by the Eagles

HONOLULU, Hawaii – No. 21 Baylor volleyball closed out the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic with a 3-1 win over Georgia Southern on Sunday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, completing a 3-0 sweep of the event.

The Bears rode a season-high .303 hitting percentage and a season-high 60 kills in the victory, dropping just the third set before closing out the Eagles in four. Ksenia Rakhmanchik and Nadiya Johnson combined for 31 kills, while Tori Davis added 10 for her first double-digit showing of the season.

RUNDOWN
Georgia Southern hung with Baylor throughout the opener, tying the set at 12 near the midway point, before the two traded runs down the stretch. The Bears used some big-time kills from Rakhmanchik and Johnson to build a 22-18 cushion and hold on for a 25-22 win.

Baylor carried the momentum into the second, building a comfortable lead only to see the Eagles trim it to just one at 17-16. From there, the Bears closed with a flurry, going on a 9-1 run, highlighted by four BU kills in a row and an ace by Victoria Davis to take the set, 25-16, and grab a 2-0 match advantage.

The Bears battled in the third, trading points with the Eagles throughout the frame before Georgia Southern used a 4-1 run late to take control and hold on to force a fourth set, winning 25-23.

Baylor bounced back quickly after an early 0-2 deficit in the fourth, responding with its strongest offensive set of the match, hitting .422 with 20 kills on 45 attacks, and after a back-and-forth battle, GSU cut BU's lead to just one at 21-20. The Bears rallied consecutive kills as part of a 4-1 run for the final push, sealing the paradise sweep.

GAME NOTES

The Bears are 3-0 for the second time in the last three years and the third time in the McGuyre Era.
Johnson tallied a season-high 12 kills and has 41 points through three matches.
Ksenia Rakhmanchik led the team in kills for her third-straight match, and tallied her 12th-straight double-digit kill match.
Victoria Davis posted a season-high 10 kills.
Grace Carroll finished with nine kills while hitting .412 and continued her productive opening weekend.
Bears recorded a season-high .303 attack percentage; BU is 93-2 under Ryan McGuyre when eclipsing the .300 mark.
Baylor hit .422 with 20 kills in the fourth set to close out the victory.
20 kills were Baylor's most in a set since getting 20 against Arkansas State in the NCAA Tournament last season.
Morgan Madison notched a season-high of 18 digs.
Bears claim first-ever meeting with Georgia Southern, taking a 1-0 all-time lead.
