Volleyball Falls to Oklahoma in Five

NORMAN, Okla. - Senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz hit .255 with 23 kills, nine digs and five blocks as Baylor dropped a 3-2 (30-26, 20-30, 33-31, 26-30, 15-13) decision to Oklahoma in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at McCasland Field House.

Freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakulya hit .536 with 17 kills, seven digs and seven blocks, while freshman middle blocker Nicole LeBlanc had eight kills and nine blocks. Freshman middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young hit .438 with seven kills and seven blocks as sophomore setter Emily Huston added 59 assists. Senior libero Stevie Nicholas led the Bears (11-14, 3-9 Big 12) defensively with 10 digs, and the Bears had 17 blocks, their highest output of the season.

Joanna Schmitt led the Sooners (10-13, 2-9) with 24 kills and added 13 digs, while Christina Maynes had 18 kills and a match-high 16 digs. Sheena Werling added 19 kills, eight digs and five blocks.

OU scored the first three points of game five, but Baylor answered back by scoring the next three. With the game tied at 9, the Sooners scored two-straight which allowed them to go on for a 15-13 victory. OU hit .350 in game five, while Baylor hit .214.

Baylor got off to a quick start in game one by scoring five-straight points behind the serve of Guilliard-Young to jump out to a 9-3 lead. The Bears eventually led 22-17, but the Sooners stormed back by scoring seven-straight points to take a 24-22 lead. Baylor answered with three-straight of its own to go up 25-24, but with the score tied 26-26, the Sooners scored the last four points to win the game, 30-26. OU hit .421 compared to .257 for the Bears. Schwartz led Baylor with four kills, while Maynes and Schmitt had six each for the Sooners.

Game two was a see-saw battle early until Baylor went on an 11-point run behind the serve of sophomore defensive specialist Marisa Kersten to take a 20-11 lead. Baylor hit .306 and Schwartz had five kills as the Bears evened the match, 30-20. OU hit only .182 as Schmitt tallied five more kills.

The Bears took a 5-1 lead in game three, but the Sooners came right back to tie the game, 6-6. The two teams were tied six times until OU took a 16-13 lead. Trailing 25-23, Baylor scored five-straight again behind Kersten's serve to go up 28-25, but the Sooners came right back and took a 30-29 lead. After a couple of ties, the Sooners put away the final two points to take the game, 33-31. Baylor hit .250 for the game, while OU hit only .196, but the Sooners continued to play well defensively to take the advantage.

Baylor scored the first four points of game four with Kersten registering three aces, but OU came right back and took a 7-5 lead. The Bears tied the game, 17-17, on a Huston ace then regained the lead on a block. The Sooners tied the game at 20, but the Bears scored the next five points to take control then won the game, 30-26, to send the match to a decisive fifth-game. Baylor hit .231 and got eight kills from Vakulya to hold off OU, which hit .379.

The Bears return to action when they host Texas Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
