WACO, Texas - Freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakulya hit .464 for the week with 4.57 kills, 2.57 digs and 1.00 assist per game to earn her first Big 12 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honor and the Bears' first of the season, the league office announced Wednesday.
Vakulya led Baylor to victory over Iowa State on Saturday by hitting .556 on 36 attempts with a career-high 23 kills, passing her previous high of 19 kills against Wyoming on Sept. 13. She also added 12 digs and a career-high four assists to post her seventh double-double of the season, five of which have come in Big 12 play.
The Szeged, Hungary native hit .300 with nine kills, six digs, three assists and four blocks in Wednesday's loss at Colorado.
For the season, Vakulya is hitting .205 and ranks second on the team with 254 kills and third with 245 digs. Her rookie campaign highlights include a career-high 23-dig effort against Ole Miss on Aug. 30, a career-high seven blocks at Oklahoma on Aug. 29 and three solo blocks at Texas Tech on Nov. 1.
The Bears hit the road to face SMU in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night in Dallas, before returning home to host Texas on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
