WACO, Texas - Baylor senior outside hitter Stevie Nicholas had 14 kills to lead the team for the second-straight match, but the Bears dropped a 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-20) decision to Texas in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
Nicholas hit .226 and added eight digs, while senior outside hitter Tisha Schwartz added nine kills and had two blocks to move up to seventh on Baylor's all-time list. Freshman outside hitter Andrea Vakulya led the Bears (12-18, 4-12 Big 12) defensively with 14 digs, while sophomore setter Emily Huston had 29 assists to give her 1,330 for the season, which his the fifth-highest single-season assist total at Baylor.
Mira Topic hit .486 with 21 kills and seven digs to lead Texas (12-13, 7-9), while Bethany Howden added 14 kills and 11 digs. Erin Larson paced the Longhorns defensively with 12 digs. Texas hit .327 for the match, compared to just .169 for the Baylor, and the Longhorns outblocked the Bears, 9-3.
The two teams traded blows early nine ties until game one was knotted, 18-18. Texas then reeled off four-straight points on back-to-back kills by Topic and back-to-back errors by Baylor to go up, 22-18, and held on for the 30-26 victory. The Longhorns hit .275 in the game, while the Bears hit .184.
The Bears got off to a quick start in game two by ripping off a six-point run to take a 9-4 lead. Texas came right back and tied the match, 11-11. Baylor had two-point advantages throughout the game, but could never shake Texas as the Longhorns tied the game again at 24-24. Texas then scored four-straight points and sealed the game, 30-26.
Baylor couldn't get going in game three as Texas used runs of four and five points to jump out to a 14-5 lead. The Longhorns' hit .378 for the game and led by as many as 12, while the Bears hit only .136 to drop the final game, 30-20.
Baylor returns to action when it travels to face No. 18 Texas A&M on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at G. Rollie White Coliseum in College Station, Texas.
