MONROE, La. - Stephanie Pomes hit her second home run of the season, lifting Baylor past Mercer 2-1 here Friday in first-day action of the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by Louisiana-Monroe. The Lady Bears move to 8-5 on the season with the victory, while Mercer falls to 5-5.
Despite hitting the ball extremely well in the first two innings, Baylor was held hitless until Pomes' fourth-inning blast. Kelly Levesque led off the bottom of the first with a line drive to center that nearly got over the head of Mercer center fielder Jennifer Dolan. Sarah Caudle led off the second with a screaming line drive to right-center, but the speedy Dolan was able to snag it on the run.
Nikki Bowley put Mercer ahead in the second when she led off the inning with a solo homer to left. However, that lead was erased two innings later. Kelly Osburn drew a one-out walk and then stole second. Two batters later, Pomes drilled a 3-2 offering over the right-field fence just inside in the foul pole. Harmony Schwethelm's one-out single in the fifth was the Lady Bears' only other hit.
Vitek pitched the first three innings and allowed two hits with no walks and six strikeouts, including four straight whiffs following Bowley's home run. Katie Decker (2-2) tossed the final 12 outs for the victory. She scattered three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Baylor returns to action Saturday and will play three games, weather permitting. The Lady Bears play Louisiana Tech at 9 a.m. and Louisiana-Monroe at 11 a.m. Bracket play begins at 5 p.m.
