WACO, Texas - April Luce doubled off the rightfield fence and scored Kelly Osburn with two outs in the fourth as No. 25 Baylor defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi here Thursday. The Lady Bears move to 15-7 with their sixth consecutive victory. The Islanders fall to 8-8.
Baylor took an early 1-0 lead after scoring in the first inning for the fifth consecutive game. Kim Wilmoth singled to the hole at shortstop and then stole second. Two batters later, Sarah Caudle singled to right-center, scoring Wilmoth.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tied the score in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Eden Goss lifted her first home run of the season over the centerfield fence. That set the stage for Luce's heroics in the fourth. The hit extended her hitting streak to six games. Osburn, who led off the fourth with a single up the middle, has now hit safely in nine straight.
Cristin Vitek (9-2) dominated the Islanders for all but two pitches on the day. She allowed one run on two hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Vitek used just 82 pitches in seven innings of work, 62 strikes with only 20 balls. Her only 2-0 count was on Goss' homer, and Vitek faced the minimum from that point on.
Caudle, who went 2-for-3 on the day, hit her 30th career double in the sixth. She now owns the school record for career two-baggers, breaking a tie with Tori Birk (1996-1999) and Mary Hess (1996-1999).
Baylor returns to action here Friday as the Islander Invitational begins. The Lady Bears face Texas Tech in a non-conference game at 10:30 a.m. and New Mexico at 3 p.m.
