Men's Basketball 3/13/2003 12:00:00 AM
Texas Tech

Head Coach Bob Knight

On the game ...
"Well I think that we probably had as good a start as we've had all year. Our starts have not been particularly good recently and we got off to a really good start. Then we started jamming things up inside, or trying too and then I thought Baylor made a really good adjustment. Instead of saying OK we're going to try and push the ball inside, they started taking shots as they got them."

On team effort...
"Our team has not been a really good team consistently at both ends of the floor. And our team has to play very very well to be in the ball game tomorrow night, at both ends of the floor. We may get a basket and give it up right away. We come down on occasion and take a bad shot and then give up a basket, that's a four-point swing. We just have not been consistently good as a team all year long, or in this league. Maybe we're just not good enough, I don't know. But I felt we played a pretty decent non-conference schedule and we played pretty well."

Senior Guard Will Chavis

On remainder of season ...
"I don't know about the NCAA tournament because we don't pick (the teams), but we just have to play hard because we don't feel like we've achieved this season and we have something to prove because we haven't played our best basketball."

On defending Lawrence Roberts ...
"We had to use a combination (of sagging inside and perimeter defense) because Roberts is a good passer and we had to know how far to get off our man but, at first, they were hitting shots in our faces. They rotated well and got some open shots."

Senior Forward Kasib Powell

On win over Baylor ...
"I think (the win) goes to show that this team has a lot of pride because we've lost some close games by five or less and we wanted to show that we could win a close one. We're tired of saying 'our backs are against the wall' and then coming in the locker room with a loss and for Will and I, that could have been it so and we've been underachievers so far and we felt like we had to pick it up."

BAYLOR

Head Coach Dave Bliss

On the game ...
"I don't have a revelation. We had our opportunities, we just didn't make plays when we had to make plays. Tech hung in there longer than we did, and they deserve to win the game."

On Matt Sayman's free throws...
"Matt's made a lot of big free throws, and he'll make a lot more. There's no doubt when you get in a game like this, you have to make plays like that, and I know Matt feels terrible about it, but he's a terrific kid, so as badly as he feels about it, he also understands it's part of competing. He's not going to make them all. Matt will bounce back. I thought he did a terrific job on Andre Emmett. (Matt's) the slowest kid in the gym, but he understands how to get around screens, and he limited things. I know Andre had a fine game scoring-wise, but Matt did just what we wanted out of our game plan. At halftime, he's had two points in the first game and seven points in this game, he probably gets a little excited down the stretch and does some things. He also got a lot of points out of our defense. I'm not saying we were'nt trying to protect our lead, but we didn't need to shoot quickly.

The aspect of Kenny's turnover, we had a couple of turnovers that probably, we'd been better off being stronger with the ball. You have to be strong with the ball, you have to make free throws, and you have to rebound. We made enough baskets to win the game with about two minutes to go. From that point forth, all we have to do is handle the ball and make free throws. The only things we set up, we set a couple of plays up. John (Lucas) got a great look out of the corner, we got Kenny (Taylor) a look on the top. Kenny got 11 each half, and he got almost the same shots each half. What we knew they would do - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure, you go find and key on Lawrence (Roberts). What did he get, 28, the last game? So our thing was, as much as we want Lawrence to still go after it, we want to be able to swing the ball to people who have easier shots, and we missed the first five or six, and it looks ugly when we missed shots, but we started making them. We had a good lead, 51-61, we do a great job of jumping out on (Will) Chavis, and then he hits that 3. Things went south from that point on."

Sophomore Guard Kenny Taylor

On your overall thoughts on tonight's loss...
"It'sa goal of every team to make postseason play, but we have to go back and work even harder for next year."

Junior Center RT Guinn

On your thoughts of this loss...
"It is always tough to come out and lose like that. All you can do is finish the game out and hope that the better team wins. We will go back now and work hard towards next year."
